Isis is a Boston, Massachusetts based band that has borrowed and helped to evolve a sound pioneered by the members' friends in Neurosis and Godflesh. Isis' music can be described as consisting of lengthy songs that focus heavily on repetition. Isis tend to focus less on vocals, they are usually sparse within a given song, and concentrate more on the composition as a purely musical piece.
The band was formed in 1997 and released a few records on such labels as Escape Artist, Second Nature and Neurot Recordings. Since the release of the album Oceanic, Isis have released their work on Ipecac Recordings, though they have said they have no plans to collaborate with Mike Patton (the label's prolific founder) in the near future. Justin Chancellor, of Alternative Metal band Tool, leant his skills to one track on the bands latest release, "Panopticon"
The guitarist/vocalist of Isis, Aaron Turner, is also the owner of Hydrahead Records and its subsidiary Tortuga Recordings. All members of the band also in a number of side projects including Old Man Gloom, House of Low Culture, Lotus Eaters and Red Sparrowes.
