  • History

In 2002 a new talent search show was launched called Popstars: The Rivals. Several thousand young hopefuls were audition and where whittled down to a final line-up of five females and five males. The resulting female line-up became Girls Aloud and is managed by Louis Walsh. The winning boy band was called One True Voice and was managed by Pete Waterman, however they achieved little success and quickly disbanded.
In Christmas 2002 the two bands battled for the number one position in the UK's singles chart. Girls Aloud won with their single Sound of the Underground. Their debut album of the same name was released in May 2003, following the #2 hit No Good Advice, which proved most critics wrong in the fact that Girls Aloud were going to be one-hit wonders.
Life Got Cold (#3) and Jump (#2) – cover of a Pointer Sisters song which featured on the soundtrack to 2003's Love Actually – were also released in 2003. Both received great feedback from the British public and helped increase sales of the album, which reached platinum status at the end of the year.
In 2003 bandmember Cheryl Tweedy was convicted of assaulting a nightclub toilet attendant and sentenced to community service.
Their first 2004 single, The Show, also debuted at #2 as did Love Machine – a track which split opinion but became one of the years anthems, and was even nominated for ITV's Record Of The Year accolade, but they were beaten by Busted with Thunderbirds Are Go. They finally hit Number 1 again with their next single, a cover of The Pretenders' I'll Stand By You, released towards the end of November. It was the official single of the Children in Need 2004 appeal.
Their second album, entitled What Will The Neighbours Say? was released on November 29 and entered the album charts at #6, going platinum in under one month. An important element in the success of What Will The Neighbours Say? was the production and song writing work of Xenomania, a British production house. The girls' next single Wake Me Up was released on February 21 and charted at #4.
They are currently (July, 2005) working on their next single entitled "Long Hot Summer" which is to be released in August or September, 2005. Their third studio album, of which no details are yet available is due to be released in October or November, 2005.

    2004 Tour

Success in 2004 and high sales of their second album, which strongly out-performed the first, resulted in the group announcing a tour for May 2005. Tickets sold fast and the initial 17 date tour grew to 24 dates in a matter of weeks.
The tour consisted of the following dates:
